Step-by-Step Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until smooth and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes using an electric mixer.
- Add in the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until fully incorporated.
- Gradually blend in the flour, baking powder, and a pinch of salt until the dough forms. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Roll out the chilled dough to about 1/4-inch thick and cut out heart shapes with a cookie cutter.
- Arrange the cut cookies on the prepared baking sheets.
- Bake the cookies for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
- Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheets before transferring them to a wire rack.
- Prepare the royal icing by whisking together powdered sugar, egg whites (or meringue powder), and lemon juice until smooth.
- Decorate the cooled cookies with royal icing using a piping bag, and allow the icing to set.
- Serve and enjoy your beautifully decorated heart-shaped sugar cookies!
