  • 1 tbsp Hot sauce Adjust to taste
For the Breading
  • 1 cup Flour Use gluten-free flour mix if gluten-free
  • 1 4 Cornstarch
  • 1 4 Cornmeal
  • 1 tbsp Oregano Can swap for Italian seasoning
  • 1 tbsp Creole seasoning
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Onion powder
  • 1 tsp Paprika
  • 1 tsp Black/white pepper
For Cooking
  • Oil Oil Enough for deep-frying

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Prepare Tofu: Freeze a block of extra firm tofu for 24 hours, then thaw in refrigerator overnight. Press tofu for 15-20 minutes.
  2. Marinate Tofu: Cut pressed tofu into 1-inch cubes, marinate in vegan chicken broth for at least 15 minutes.
  3. Make Buttermilk: Mix plant-based milk, apple cider vinegar, and hot sauce; let thicken for 5 minutes.
  4. Prepare Breading: Combine flour, cornstarch, cornmeal, oregano, creole seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and pepper in a bowl.
  5. Heat Oil: Preheat oil to 370°F (187°C); ensure enough oil for tofu to float while cooking.
  6. Bread Tofu: Dip marinated tofu in buttermilk, then coat with the breading mixture. Repeat for double coating if desired.
  7. Fry Chicken: Fry coated tofu in small batches for 3-4 minutes until golden brown; flip if needed.
  8. Drain and Serve: Remove tofu with a skimmer, drain on paper towels, and serve hot.
